Flyndermusklen * Soleus

Veins, particularly in extremities, contain one-way valves that permit flow toward the heart and prevent retrograde flow.  Deep veins in the lower limbs, for example, are surrounded by large muscle groups that compress the deep veins when the muscles contract. Venous compression increases the pressure within the vein, which closes upstream valves and opens downstream valves, thereby acting as a pumping mechanism.  External compression of veins, particularly when muscles in extremities are contracted rhythmically as during exercise, propels blood toward the heart and increases venous return (see figure to the right).  This pump is also important when standing to help maintain central venous pressure and venous return, and to lower venous and capillary pressures in the feet and lower limbs.
